What Are TMJ Orthotics and Full Mouth Rehabilitation?
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) orthotics and full mouth rehabilitation are specialized dental treatments aimed at addressing jaw dysfunction and restoring overall oral health. Using advanced technology, including Biometrics Biopak muscle EMG (electromyography) technology and jaw tracking, these treatments provide precise diagnostics and tailored solutions for patients suffering from TMJ disorders and complex dental issues.
TMJ Orthotics
What They Are: This is phase 1 of TMJ treatment. TMJ orthotics are custom-made dental devices designed to stabilize the jaw and alleviate symptoms associated with TMJ disorders. These orthotics help to realign the bite, reduce muscle tension, and relieve pain in the jaw, neck, and head. Orthotics are removable by the patient and is reversible, but needs the care of Dr. Yang and compliance of the patient.
Indications: TMJ orthotics are ideal for patients experiencing symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking or popping of the jaw, headaches, and teeth grinding (bruxism). They are often recommended as a non-invasive first step in treating TMJ issues.
Benefits: By providing a comfortable and supportive environment for the jaw, TMJ orthotics can lead to reduced pain, improved jaw function, and better overall quality of life.
Full Mouth Rehabilitation
What It Is: This is Phase II of TMJ Treatment. Full mouth rehabilitation involves a comprehensive approach to restoring the function and aesthetics of a patient’s entire mouth. This treatment may encompass various procedures, including crowns, bridges, implants, and orthodontics, tailored to meet individual needs.
Indications: Full mouth rehabilitation is recommended for patients with multiple dental issues, such as severe wear, misalignment, extensive decay, or tooth loss. It aims to restore both the function and appearance of the smile.
Benefits: This multidisciplinary approach allows for a complete assessment and treatment plan, ensuring that all aspects of your oral health are addressed for optimal results.
Utilizing Advanced Technology
Both TMJ orthotics and full mouth rehabilitation benefit from cutting-edge technology:
Biometrics: Bioresearch Biopak Muscle EMG Technology: This advanced system measures muscle activity in the jaw and surrounding areas, providing valuable data to help diagnose TMJ disorders and assess muscle function.
Jaw Tracker: This technology monitors jaw movements and positions, offering insights into how the jaw functions during various activities, such as chewing and speaking. The combination of muscle EMG and jaw tracking enables precise treatment planning and customized orthotic devices.
The Process of Treatment
Comprehensive Evaluation: Your journey begins with a thorough examination that includes a review of your medical history, dental concerns, and a detailed assessment using Biometrics technology.
Diagnostic Imaging: Advanced imaging techniques, including jaw tracking and muscle EMG measurements, will be employed to analyze your jaw function and identify any dysfunction or misalignment.
Custom Treatment Plan: Based on the findings, your dentist will develop a personalized treatment plan that may include TMJ orthotics for symptom relief and a comprehensive full mouth rehabilitation strategy.
Fabrication of Orthotics: If TMJ orthotics are recommended, custom appliances will be fabricated to fit your mouth comfortably and support proper jaw alignment.
Rehabilitation Procedures: For full mouth rehabilitation, necessary procedures (such as composites, crowns, implants, or orthodontic treatments) will be performed according to the agreed-upon plan, only after phase 1 orthotics is complete and your bite is in a stable, comfortable position.
Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments will allow for adjustments to orthotics and ongoing evaluations of your treatment progress, ensuring optimal outcomes.

Teeth becoming shorter over time is a sign of severe grinding and use of teeth. To realign the bite and restore normal use, a removable device is placed in the mouth 24 hours a day to the ideal position that is comfortable for the individual's jaw muscles. We use muscle sensors to detect muscle activity and use a device that will allow us to create a smile that is esthetically ideal for the patient. Every smile, every mouth is unique. There is no one-size fits all, that is why having objective information about the muscles is so important. We use the Bioresearch Biopak Jaw Tracker technology to aid us in finding the right bite that is comfortable to the patient. Once we can find the comfortable spot, that's when we can move into full mouth rehabilitation. In this case, we used non-invasive dentistry to restore the mouth using no-prep composite dentistry.

One of the simplest ways to protect your teeth from wearing down and breaking is to wear a night guard. It can also help you see the marks on the guard if you grind your teeth at night.

To objectively see if your jaw muscles are overworking, we use out jaw tracking and muscle activity machine to measure.

Kathy's original teeth were severely worn down due to grinding, TMJ disorder, and facial muscle discomfort.

We used composite resin veneers to restore her smile. This smile was achieved without grinding away any natural teeth. The white filling material we placed on her teeth allowed us to rebuild her teeth while protecting them from future damage.

There had already been so much damage to her teeth that removing more teeth to rebuild them was not ideal. She had to be treated in a way that conserved the strength of her teeth.

We created her beautiful smile based on her golden proportion measurements.
