Do I still need my orthodontic retainer?

Today I had a patient stop in for an emergency visit. His lower bar felt weird, like the metal had detached. It was poking his tongue. He was worried that his teeth would start to move again if he waited too long. We took a look and sure enough there was that little bar that lost its glue. We removed the entire bar and replaced it with a new one. See that picture above? That’s the new retainer we placed for him! Now he doesn’t have to worry anymore that the teeth might move.

Did you have braces?

Did you stop wearing your retainers?

If you’ve answered yes to both questions, there’s a high chance that your teeth have started to crowd again.

Here’s the interesting thing about teeth: they MOVE! Teeth have these little strong fibers in them that attach them to the bone. These little fibers, called periodontal ligaments, can react to forces in our mouths. When they feel pressure in one direction, they tend to move in that direction. This is the very reason why your teeth were able to be moved with orthodontics in the first place! Unfortunately, those same fibers may allow the teeth to move back to where they were before you had braces.

What does that mean for you?

Well, if you wear your retainers nightly, or your permanent retainers haven’t had a problem, then most likely you are alright. Everything is perfect because you’ve followed the instructions, or your teeth are in their most stable position and you can stop reading this post.

But, if your teeth have shifted, then this post is for you!

Many times I meet a person who has moved away for college or work. During these important life changes, retainers may have been lost, broken or discarded. Or the little bar broke on the bottom back teeth and life got too busy to go back home to fix it.

Whether you lost it or broke it, it is important to get your teeth evaluated to see if you still need a retainer. Straight teeth makes it easier to floss and brush. That helps keep the gums strong enough to keep holding onto your teeth.

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to fly home to see your orthodontist.

Save that money for a nice relaxing vacation when the pandemic gets more controlled. Instead, you can book an appointment with us and we can fix or replace your permanent retainer. We can also make customized removable retainers.

But what if it has been so long that your teeth have started to crowd again?

Well, then it’s time for us to have a conversation on whether you’d like to start clear aligner therapy (Invisalign) or get brackets for orthodontics again. Usually we can take care of you right here in our dental clinic. As your dentist, I stay updated on my continuing dental education to bring the best treatments to you, and that includes orthodontic treatment. I am a member of the American Orthodontic Society. If your treatment is deemed more difficult, I will send you to an orthodontic specialist that can take care of you.
